Some of our trainees comments and experiences about finding a TEFL job after CELTA
Ben Buston, UK - 'Like anywhere it's a nightmare until you get a job and then with hindsight it seems easy. I was told by one school that there was no work at all in Barcelona and nearly left because of this. However, I got calls from about 8 schools in total so there IS definitely work out there.'
Jason Blean, Ireland - ' I applied via the Internet from home during December 02 and Jan of 03 , without success. I flew to Perpignan for the first week in February and went straight to Girona, where I went round knocking on doors. After an unsuccessful week there, I moved on, through Barcelona, with the possibility of "leads" in Pamplona. I stopped off in Zaragoza and went round knocking on doors. I received a job offer the same day .'
Beth Potter, USA - 'From correspondence and from talking with other Americans that I know here in Juneau who have either taught in Spain, or know people teaching in Spain, it sounds like the only way for Americans to do this is under the table. I am still thinking of coming back to Spain in September to try to find a teaching job, and will continue to try to set something up ahead of time, but am anticipating that I will probably end up just showing up and trying to find a job once I am there, and will probably have to do this without the proper working papers.'
Abigail McDonnell, Ireland - 'I got a job in a school in Sant Cugat near Barcelona from October 2003-December 2003. I could have worked there for longer but I wanted to return home for Christmas. I am now teaching in Northern Thailand. I'm not sure how hard/easy it is to get work in Spain as I had no difficulty getting work as my flatmate worked in the school that also offered me a job.'
Andy Bliss, UK - ' It took an awful lot of pounding of pavements and fruitless enquiries, but I managed to get my first work within two weeks of returning to Barcelona after Christmas. Initially it was just four or five hours, but within about three weeks I had a full timetable spread between two schools. I'm now working between 25 and 30 hours a week.'
